STORY 60 - Should I, or should I not?
After that wild weekend in Las Vegas, things have pretty much settled down to normal. I’ve just been going on my assignments as per usual and hanging out with Matthew as and when I’m free. Just the other day, I was over at his place, and we were just chilling and watching a movie together. We were too lazy to head out to grab lunch when we were done, so we just ordered in, and we had my favourite Thai takeout.
Matthew’s been opening up to me more and telling me about his friends and family, which I really appreciate. It’s nice that he’s confiding in me, plus I get to understand what had led him to be the man that he is today. Anyway, today he was just talking about his friend Freddie, and how he was thinking about hiring an escort.
“…the trouble is, though, that he’s married.” He finished.
Okay, I wasn’t going to say anything that would give me away. I’d just… be nonchalant.
“So why doesn’t he just have sex with his wife then?”
“Well, because she doesn’t want to, all the time. I’m not saying that it’s right for him to look for an escort, of course – I’m just saying it’s a difficult position to be in.”
Was it just me, or was he carefully scrutinizing my facial expressions? I nodded slowly, without saying anything.
“And I mean, it’s really tough for me too. I actually know Freddie’s wife as well – I met her through a mutual friend ages ago, before I even got to know Freddie. So I kind of feel – I don’t know, I feel obligated to them both.”
“Oh, that’s a tough one.” More nodding.
“What do you think I should do?”
Just let him do whatever he wants to. If he wasn’t happy in the relationship, it’d show one way or another. Even if he doesn’t hire an escort, he might start visiting a strip club, or maybe he’d have an emotional affair with someone at work. No, I couldn’t say that.
“Wow, I don’t know. What do you think you should do?”
“I know Freddie feels really frustrated – he basically feels like he’s stuck in a sexless marriage, and he needs an outlet. But I mean, this isn’t the right way to go about doing things, and I just don’t know if I could live with myself if I didn’t say anything to his wife.”
Oh, Matthew. This endeared me to him and made me wary, all at the same time. He had such a big heart, and it was obvious that he cared about his friends – but after everything I went through with Jon and Brody, I was really looking for a man whose life was uncomplicated and drama-free.
“I mean, think about it. If your friend Mandy’s boyfriend was essentially going to cheat on her, you’d want to tell her, right?”
Okay, he did have a point. Regardless of how much of a shitshow it would cause, I would definitely tell Mandy. You can’t ignore girlcode.
“Well, maybe there’s another way around it,” I heard myself saying. “How about you talk to Freddie first and tell him how you’re feeling? It’s not as though you’re being unsupportive – but it’s just that you’re making sure he goes about resolving his situation in the right way.”
“That could work,” he smiled. “Hey, you’re pretty good at this, you know? Maybe you could fall back on becoming a counsellor, if that whole coding thing doesn’t work out.”
I pushed him playfully, and then held out my palm. “That’d be a hundred bucks for this session, thank you very much.”
He leaned forward to grab me and started planting kisses on my face. “I don’t have any cash on me right now, so I guess I’ll have to pay you in kisses.”
Crisis averted for now, but I wouldn’t be able to keep my job from him forever. From the conversation I had with him today, Matthew seemed pretty open and non-judgmental, so maybe he wouldn’t react as badly as Brody. Scratch that – I knew he wouldn’t react as badly as Brody. But should I tell him right off the bat, or should I bide my time?
On one hand, I wanted to be honest with him. If he wasn’t okay with it, then I could just cut my losses and move on. But on the other hand, maybe I had to give us more time before springing such a huge surprise on him. Oh my god – what a dilemma.
