Story 57 - A glimmer of hope
Just had a fantastic date with Matthew (the guy who wasn’t over his ex the last time we went out!), so I’m really happy. Okay, I’ll start from the top.
So last week, I was kind of mopey after hearing that Jon and Mandy were together. (I mean, I love them both to bits, but it just feels as though everyone’s got their love life sorted out except me). I was actually binge-watching Love Island and drinking wine all by myself when I got a DM from Matthew.
Hey, I still feel bad about how we left things. Can I make it up to you? How about we do something this Saturday?
I enjoyed Matthew’s company when we last hung out, but at the same time, I didn’t want to waste my energy on him if he wasn’t ready. So I texted back…
You over your ex or just looking for a rebound? LOL.
And he replied in two seconds:
Harsh, but I deserved it. No, that chapter is fully closed. Ready to move on now.
It sounded pretty promising, so I decided to give it a shot.
When Saturday rolled around, I was feeling pretty good about that date. I took my time getting ready – I was wearing a yellow wrap dress which was cut to show just a hint of cleavage, and I curled my hair and put it up. Matthew came all the way to my apartment to pick me up (bonus points!), and he whistled when I walked out of the lift and met him in the lobby.
“Thanks for giving me a second chance. I’ve got an awesome date planned,” he said, as I leaned in and kissed his cheek.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“Well, you’ll just have to wait and find out.”
Turned out he had signed us up for a pottery class, and I was groaning internally as I stepped into the studio at Shoreditch. I was not an artsy person, and I was pretty sure that whatever I touched would end up as a misshapen lump of clay.
“Matthew, I suck at art,” I complained to him, and he pulled me in to give me a quick hug, and kissed the top of my head.
“Nah, you’ll do great. Just give it a shot!” He handed me an apron.
By some miracle of nature, I wasn’t too bad at pottery-making, and I actually enjoyed myself as well. It was definitely out of my comfort zone, but then again, it was fun to try something that I normally wouldn’t do.
Plus, Matthew finished his piece pretty early on, so he came around and sat behind me in a very Ghost-esque moment. You know how Patrick Swayze wraps his arms around Demi Moore while she’s at the pottery wheel and they have this super intense moment? I mean, I didn’t turn around to give Matthew a smooch or anything, but I was definitely feeling a lot of sexual tension in the air, if you know what I mean.
After the class was over, we headed to dinner, and then adjourned to a pub for drinks.
“Right, what do you want?” Matthew asked me when we sat down, and I told him I’d have one of the craft beers that the place had on tap.
To my astonishment, he got out of his seat, went behind the bar, and started pulling a pint for us to share. It turned out that his best mate from university owned the place, and Matthew drops in to help out here from time to time. I have to say - the more time I was spending with this guy, the more interesting he seemed.
We had a great time at the bar – we were just chatting and sharing stories (like how we did on our first date), and the conversation really flowed. At one point, Matthew spotted some of his other friends from university who also happened to drop in that night, and we had a game of Dare or Dare.
The guys dared Matthew to kiss anyone at the table (there were two other girls that he’d known from university sitting with us), and he turned to me and laid one on me without hesitating. It was supposed to just be a peck, but it turned into a full-on snog, and his friends were hooting and cheering us on the whole time. All in all, it was an amazing date. I’d say Matthew and I are definitely back on track.
